2230 vs 2238

I'm in the process of trying to choose between these two receivers. One's collecting dust in the garage, and the other is in my daughter's system, but I would like her to have the best of the two....

Sound and reliability are the most important issues, but I'm interested in any and all opinions.....

BTW, both are in very good to excellent condition, so that's not really a factor....

Thanks,

A.A.

Both are great!

I'd vote 2230 only because I really liked mine

Haven't heard 2238

Who's got a quick face shot of each to stack here?  I can't remember if the features are much different.  Rather doubt it, the 2230, although from a slightly smaller quot;classquot; of receiver (30 WPC vs. 38 WPC, a negligible difference IMHO) , was also earlier, and big enough to sport the trademark quot;midrangequot; tone control.

I think the amplifier and tuner topology are about the same, aren't they?

All that should mean that they will sound about the same, so here's my vote for the tie-breaker to decide on: which one has a cleaner face?

Oh, and major points for an optional walnut cabinet, right?

Rotate them and see which one she likes the best !

If she's like my son's it not going to matter though . (no remote control)

Well, the issue isn't so much the one she likes, it's which one gets to walk the plank....

Here's the 2238. Has a small ding in the aluminum at the left lower corner. I had to gently bend the faceplate straight after some fumble fingers bent it. BTW, do these have dial pointer lights?
I'll see about getting a  mugshot of the 2230 here in the next day or so. However, as I recall, it's faceplate is essentially perfect. No wood on either...

Black one (this one was used by Dark Vador) :My mistake ! It was 2238 and not 2238b. Sorry

Good on you for letting her have the good one. Let her have the 2238 and learn how to use the signal strength and FM tuning meters. Most kids these days wouldn't have a clue!

Yes, they do.

Face shot and a nudie of my 2230 for reference.

Well, for a young person, the 2230 has one thing that may be attractive: the input/output (quot;Dubbingquot;) on the front panel would be useful for plugging in an ipod.

I don't think she'll care that there is no FM centre-tuning indicator or separate left/right tone controls...

She'll be well trained. She'll know how to plug a Y-adapter from an iPod to the tape in jacks of a receiver before she leaves the house. Suppose I do have to get her an iPod first....

Gotta train girls to be able to take care of themselves, and not rely on some yahoo not worth the price of his shoes. She'll also know how to use a pistol too, but that's a whole 'nother topic....

No contest...

Dork Vador would approve

It's great she's listening to good equipment. What kind of tunes does she like? I like the 2230 better, because I think the balance slider on the 2238 looks kind of tacky. But I could be wrong.
