Can I use my turntable without a phono stage?

I've got my turntable sitting in front of me and Led Zepplin sitting lonely in the corner. My phono stage has not made it to my doorstep and I'm starting to get really anxious. If I were to plug my turntable directly into my receiver (no phono inputs) would it work? Would I just need to turn my volume up really loud to get any sound out of it?

NO!!!
There is this little thing called RIAA equalization that has to be used to process the audio signal....
You're just gonna have to wait....
Sorry for the bad news...

Hey, I just noticed, OVER 200 POSTS!!!!  YAY!

I would say YES....but it will sound like $#@%!

I'm gonna say yes too... but you sure ain't gonna like it... been there.. done it... not gonna revisit...

it hurts nothing.. but there is no volume, and it sounds like fingers on a chalk board kinda...

Ditto what echorover and similost said.

It's your choice, though. Nothing will be harmed.

Just a curious question, now that we bring up the subject of RIAA eq on a magnetic phono input.  God forbid, were someone to use a ceramic cartridge on, say, a record changer or old phono, and use the aux/line level inputs, I know that it works, but how is RIAA EQ handled?

Cheers,

It isn't handled.  For that reason it's advantageous when playing 78s which require no RIAA EQ.

Well, some ceramics had the RIAA eq built in. EV, GE, Sonotone are a few that offered ceramics with the eq built in.

Love the avatar Celt, wish I had seen it first.

My bad.  Actually, you're right, most phonographs and combination units did.  I was thinking of a changer I had that used a special RIAA input in its associated receiver.
