Tuesday Twilight Score

Tonight, by pure luck, I was the first caller on a pair of SMGa's on my local CL. So I bolted over to the seller's house and picked them up for $30 bucks.

(I realize I typed the model number wrong in the title)

They do need some work -- easy stuff though. The typical wire separation from the mylar is happening on both, so I've already glued the trouble spots on the first one, and the second one is next. The cloth has to be replaced, and I think I'll use black. They didn't have stands attached either, so I'll have to make some. A quick refinish on the side rails and voilĂ , you have some new Mag's.

and, for $30.00, one musn't complain.

Great Score!  I hope you will post pics of the finished product.

Indeed I shall! I'm heading to Home Depot and Michael's (or JoAnn Fabrics) to get materials for the stands and some fabric.

The good thing is, that I tested the speakers after I glued the coils back down and now they sound beautiful, as they should.

Ok - I'm armed and ready. I have the goods in my car, and I'll be heading to my basement 'speaker repair shop' very shortly, as I am still at the office. I hope to finish one by tonight and post the pictures (before and after).

Dude you are on a roll!!!!

Freaking speaker score extravaganza in MI huh?

Seems like it -- must be the economy here. Everyone is leaving the state and shedding their loudspeakers in the process. Or they just need gas money.

wow - good score!  I have looked at maggies from time to time. Almost bought new ones once and even passed up a used pair that needed work.  The thing that has me put off is that they are 4ohm and need very high current amp.  If you have the horsepower, no problem,  but little o'l me with 38watts in the marantz might be more than it could handle?

post a before and after photos

Nice. I have 6' MGII's that have yet to be topped at my house for smoother music and SMGa's which are also very good for what they are. You are getting a nice cross section of speakers there

Congrat's!! You keep this up, and You'll have to get a wide angle lens to fit all your speak's in the pic of the man-cave

Well it's been a-slow-going so far. Tailoring the fabric to go around the Magpies is very difficult and it took me two hours to just to do one. I haven't even had time to refinish the side rails as of yet. Anyway, I have them set up now for some further listening. They seem to get better and better as I play them more. I don't think these things have had any current going through them for many years.

Have a look at the progress so far. Notice I altered the binding posts from those suck-ass stock allen-screw originals.

I'll post finals when I get them done.

A great product from Magnepan IMHO.  I got a pair of SMG (a little more efficient, and older) off CL for a bit more, the panels were fine, or I would not have bought them.

My only complaint about them is the head-in-a-vice position you have to sit in to get that great imaging.

Great score for $30 though!

I agree with ScramMan2. The head in a vice thing was just too hard to tollerate for me!

I intend to elevate them to help with that. But you guys are correct, they are very 'direct'.

But he want's 750 for them and I can't justify it. But they do look very impressive, and I bet they sound amazing.
