Is a Sansui 5000a worth refurbishing?
It seems that its easy enough to get parts for? Does anybody know a good refurbisher in central IL? Springfield area.pictures?

Yes, and no.
Casey
I had both a 5000a and it's later cousin the 5000x, and would definitely say yes to refurbishing it.
Both units were exceptional performers in all regards and pretty well built. There was a common problem with the driver boards (I forget what it was exactly, but apparently Sansui kept the service bulletin in play until the 1980's.

If the driver boards are the 1040 driver boards, read up on the thread titled:
5000 series owners with 1040 driver boards - HOW TO RETROFIT THEM!
Even if you don't do the work yourself, print out the instructions and take them to the tech you use.
Is Echowars near you? That would be my choice for a tech.

If you have a sansui 5000, 5000a, or early 5000x that uses the F1040 or F-1040-1 boards, this thread will instruct you on how to upgrade the bias devices so that the machine can operate safely.
The F6013 boards are OK to use
certainly a nice looking unit!

Couldn't quote cost, but the 5000 is easier to work on than many of the bigger monster recivers.
Mostly it will be replacing electrolytic caps, and again, that is not a bad job on these.
Thats really funny !!! I really used to love Sansui back in the early 70's and still do to this day! I found this one on craigs list. Paid 50 bucks for it, I hope I didnt get robbed!!!

Does it need refurbished? Is it working now?
As Outlaw has advised do check for the older circuit boards, the early units were prone to catching fire.
Maybe try this post in the Sansui forum and see if there's a local member that can help.

I'm not sure what's funny, but 50 for a working unit in good cosmetic shape ain't bad.

Im sorry I was laughing at quot;nosirrahquot; 's comment on being curator of Sansui storage Museum. Im going to feel really stupid if he really is !!!
